Collection: Mkhitar Aslanian

Mkhitar Aslanian is a contemporary Armenian artist whose practice spans painting and works on paper. His artistic language developed from Armenian and Georgian cultural traditions, Soviet academic training and the wider influence of twentieth-century European art. He studied easel painting at the Panos Terlemezian Art College in Yerevan from 1969 to 1973. Aslanian is primarily known for figurative and symbolic works that explore the human condition. His paintings often combine recognisable figures, objects and architectural forms with symbolism and expressive painterly surfaces. Colour, dense layering, heavy impasto and richly worked textures are important characteristics of his painting style. His works explore themes including memory, faith, solitude, fear, love, loss and the contradictions of human experience. Alongside painting, he has developed an extensive graphic practice featuring intricate detail, ornamental structures and fine linear work. Biblical subjects, personal memories, historical figures, literary themes and everyday life all appear within his broad artistic vocabulary. Overall, Aslanian's work brings together symbolism, cultural memory and emotional experience to create a distinctive and deeply personal visual language
