In The Ecstasy of St Teresa, Robert Walker reimagines one of the most recognizable images of spiritual ecstasy through the vivid language of contemporary color and geometric abstraction. Teresa's face dominates the composition, her expression caught between transcendence, sensation and surrender, while intense reds, blacks and electric tones transform the surrounding space.
The work draws on Gian Lorenzo Bernini's celebrated sculpture The Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, but Walker brings the centuries-old question into a contemporary visual world. What does it mean to experience something so powerful that the boundaries between spiritual revelation, physical sensation, artistic experience and psychological intensity begin to blur?
Rather than simply recreating a historical image, Walker uses it as a starting point for a new conversation. His classical treatment of the figure gives Teresa physical presence, while the surrounding geometric language charges the painting with contemporary energy and ambiguity.
