About
Two intertwined figures emerge through an exuberant field of colour, pattern and dripping paint in The Cost of Spring. Walker combines the physical presence of the classical figure with a restless contemporary surface, creating a painting that feels simultaneously intimate, dramatic and charged with movement.
The work draws on the myth of Proserpina, whose return from the underworld brings the arrival of spring, while her inevitable departure reminds us that renewal is never entirely free from loss. Walker transforms this ancient cycle into a contemporary meditation on love, desire, renewal and consequence.
There is a deliberate tension between beauty and unease. The figures appear caught together in a moment that could suggest intimacy, struggle or both at once. Around them, the energetic surface seems to echo the emotional complexity of the myth itself: every beginning contains the knowledge that something must eventually end.
The work is white-edged, with the canvas intentionally left white at the sides, so no additional painting of the edges is required.
