Luca Domiro
Bio
Luca Domiro is a South African-born contemporary artist of Italian heritage, living and working in the United Kingdom.
Formally trained in Cape Town, creativity was an important part of Domiro's early life, but his professional journey ultimately led him into the corporate world. Over more than two decades, he built a successful career while painting increasingly became the place he returned to for freedom, reflection and personal expression.
Eventually, the desire to create became stronger than the desire to continually pursue the next professional milestone.
That transition has become an important part of his artistic identity.
Today, Domiro's practice moves between expressive abstraction and contemporary animal portraiture, exploring recurring themes of identity, connection, belonging, resilience and personal transformation.
His South African roots remain an important influence, particularly within works featuring elephants, zebras and other animals associated with the landscapes of his childhood. Rather than approaching these subjects as conventional wildlife paintings, Domiro uses them as emotional and symbolic protagonists through which universal human experiences can be explored.
His work has attracted an expanding international audience and collector base, with original paintings and editions finding homes across the UK, Europe, North America and beyond.
Statement
My work explores identity, belonging, memory and the emotional connections we form with the natural world.
Born in South Africa, with Italian heritage and now based in the UK, my own experience of living between places and cultures has shaped much of my creative language. I am interested in what grounds us, what gives us a sense of belonging, and the moments in life that ask us to stop, reflect and reconnect with ourselves.
Animals have become an important part of that storytelling. I don't paint them simply as wildlife subjects; I am drawn to the characteristics we recognise within them - strength, intuition, protection, resilience, freedom and stillness. An owl can become a reminder to trust our instincts. A stag can represent quiet strength. A fox can embody adaptability and courage. Through these familiar forms, I explore experiences that are deeply human.
My paintings combine expressive contemporary mark-making with more considered figurative detail. Layers of acrylic, ink, texture and metallic leaf create movement and energy, while areas of negative space allow the subject to breathe. I am particularly interested in the tension between control and spontaneity - allowing instinctive marks and unexpected moments to remain visible within the finished work.
Ultimately, I want my paintings to do more than fill a wall. I want someone to recognise something of themselves within them.
