Second Story 4 continues Susan Thompson's exploration of reclaimed acrylic paint and the possibilities contained within discarded material. Salvaged fragments sit against shifting blues and greys, punctuated by energetic bursts of red, orange, yellow, green and black. The contrasting colours create a lively surface while retaining the considered balance of an abstract composition.

Each fragment brings its own shape, edge and history into the painting. Thompson does not erase these qualities but allows them to remain visible, creating a work built from relationships between different pieces rather than from a single continuous gesture. The result feels both spontaneous and carefully resolved.

At the heart of the work is the idea of renewal. Materials that once belonged to other paintings are transformed into something with its own identity, giving the work a quiet narrative about continuation and possibility.
