About

Second Story 1 begins a series built from an unusual and thoughtful material source: reclaimed pieces of acrylic paint gathered from previous paintings. Rather than discarding these fragments, Thompson responds to their existing shapes and surfaces, allowing them to become the starting point for something new. The process gives material that might otherwise have been overlooked an opportunity to carry a different story.

There is an important element of relinquishing control within the series. Instead of deciding exactly what the composition should become, Thompson responds to the fragments as they present themselves, allowing unexpected relationships to guide the work. This approach closely echoes the intuitive and experimental character that defines her wider painting practice.

The reclaimed pieces therefore become more than remnants of earlier works. They carry traces of their previous lives while forming an entirely new visual language within the present composition. Second Story 1 becomes a quietly compelling meditation on renewal, transformation and the possibility of finding value in what has already been used.
