About

Off Grid 1 begins a series exploring the desire to live beyond the formal constraints and expectations of society. At the centre of the composition, the grid becomes deliberately ambiguous, capable of representing both independence and restriction. Its ordered structure is challenged by irregular forms and expressive areas of colour that appear to push beyond its boundaries.

The grid can be read as a symbol of having one's own defined space and the freedom that comes with creating a life on personal terms. At the same time, it can suggest rules, expectations and structures that can leave an individual feeling confined. Thompson deliberately allows both interpretations to coexist, giving the work its underlying tension.

The contrast between geometric order and freer, more expressive elements creates a strong visual dialogue. Colour becomes the force that unsettles the structure, suggesting the possibility of movement beyond what has already been defined. Off Grid 1 is therefore both visually engaging and conceptually open, inviting the viewer to consider where freedom ends and restriction begins.
