In Midnight Oil the artist explores the duality of human nature through a stark, mirrored symmetry. The canvas splits the psyche into two distinct realms: the visible, waking world of the day, against the hidden, inverted landscape of the night.
By juxtaposing the grounded and submissive posture of the light greyhound with the suspended form of its shadow twin, the work reflects the disparity between our conflicting public and private personas.
The title itself evokes the solitary, nocturnal hours where societal expectations dissolve, revealing the instinct and desires of our subconscious. The painting can be displayed either way around.
