In Lighthouse, Daniels utilises Yves Klein’s signature ultramarine, which transforms a rock formation into a vibrant beacon, informing the title of the work. The piece was inspired by trips to historic fishing towns such as Hastings and Deal.
Although the work’s ascribed title conjures a feeling of guidance and safety, it sits in direct contrast to the sense of angst and existential dread that Edvard Munch’s The Scream conveys. The result is unsettling and when combined with the disorienting interpretation of scale in the piece, the viewer is left with more questions than answers.
