About

Genii 6 continues Susan Thompson's exploration of intuitive abstraction through overlapping forms, transparency and vibrant colour. Circles and lines move through shifting geometric planes, creating a composition in which structure seems to develop organically rather than being imposed from the beginning. The layered surface gives the painting a gentle sense of motion, with different elements appearing to advance and recede.

The work reflects Thompson's experimental method of allowing the painting to reveal its direction as she works. Instead of following a predetermined image, she responds to the relationships that emerge between colour, shape and space. This creates a sense of freedom within the composition, while the repeated motifs provide enough structure to hold the painting together.

There is a particularly harmonious quality to the interaction of the transparent layers. Subtle shifts in tone and overlapping shapes encourage the eye to move across the surface, discovering new connections between the individual elements. Genii 6 is a considered yet spontaneous work that captures the quiet openness and exploratory spirit of Thompson's practice.
