In Fan, a poised woman turns towards the viewer, her face partially revealed and concealed behind a traditional fan. Walker takes the language of portraiture and disrupts it with vibrant geometric forms, looping lines and intense colour, creating a fascinating tension between what is revealed and what remains hidden.
The fan becomes more than an accessory. It becomes a form of visual language — suggesting invitation, hesitation, concealment, attraction or warning. Walker's playful reference to the familiar gestures of fan language introduces a semiotic puzzle, asking the viewer to consider what the figure might be communicating without saying a word.
This interplay between body language, symbolism and geometric abstraction sits at the heart of Walker's wider practice. He describes his interest in the semiotics of the figure and the way expression and gesture can create meaning differently for every viewer.
