Directions II creates a compelling conversation between soft, fluid colour and sharply defined geometric forms. Shapes lean, intersect and overlap across the linen, while glimpses of colour appear to emerge from beneath the layered passages. The composition feels constantly in motion, with some elements appearing suspended while others seem to settle into place.
The painting's title suggests movement without prescribing a destination. Thompson allows the viewer to follow the visual pathways created by the intersecting forms, moving from one area of colour to another. This gives the work a quiet sense of tension, as though several possible directions remain open at once.
Transparency plays an important role in the painting, allowing the layers to retain traces of what came before. Colour and shape therefore become interconnected rather than separate elements, creating a surface that changes as the viewer spends time with it.
