In Between the Sheets Daniels utilises a striking contrast of materials to investigate themes of vulnerability and self-defence. The composition exploits the tension between the soft, flowing domesticity of the hanging sheet and the unyielding defensive shells of the sea urchin and tortoise.
Tortoises appear in many of the artist’s works and in this example the artist has used the heavily armoured reptile alongside the sharply spined urchin to juxtapose the gentle and comforting covering of a bedsheet. Daniels uses an interplay of textures that represent the often-contradictory ways in which we shield our innermost vulnerabilities from an abrasive external world.
