Natalie Chapman

Natalie Chapman is a Welsh figurative artist whose paintings explore the complicated, contradictory and deeply human nature of everyday life. Rooted in lived experience, her practice examines love, loss, class, identity, relationships and resilience. Growing up in social housing and navigating the stigma associated with working-class life have profoundly shaped her perspective as an artist. She is particularly interested in people and stories that are overlooked, misjudged or reduced to stereotypes. Rather than presenting working-class life through a single narrative, Chapman explores its humour, vulnerability, strength and complexity.

Her paintings bring together expressive colour, intimate compositions and emotionally charged scenes. She often captures ordinary moments that reveal something deeper about the relationships and experiences unfolding beneath the surface. Tenderness and discomfort, affection and dysfunction, humour and heartache frequently exist side by side in her work. Her approach is personal and often autobiographical, while also speaking to wider questions about representation, belonging and social identity. Her grandfather, the late artist George Chapman, documented the Welsh mining industry from the 1960s until his death in the 1990s, and watching him photograph and sketch people and places as a child had a lasting influence on her own interest in documenting underrepresented communities.

Chapman studied Art and Design at Coleg Ceredigion before completing a first-class honours degree in Fine Art at Coleg Sir Gar. Her work has been exhibited at venues including the Museum of Modern Art Wales, Canfas Gallery and Cyfarthfa Castle Museum & Art Gallery. Her exhibitions have explored personal history, working-class identity, memory and the experiences of people whose stories are not always represented in traditional gallery spaces. Through her paintings, she invites viewers to recognise something of themselves and others in the people she depicts. At the heart of her practice is the belief that art should be accessible, inclusive and unapologetically human, giving value and visibility to the experiences that make us who we are.
